    Research Focus

    The Pesavento laboratory devotes considerable effort to analyzing novel patterns of disease, including clinically enigmatic diseases from animal shelters, the human-wildlife interface, our veterinary hospital, or cases from the state diagnostic laboratory. We have a collaborative record of viral discovery that includes identification and characterization of virulent feline caliciviruses, canine diarrhea-associated viruses including Amdo-, Kobu, Sappo, and circoviruses, a bovine Astrovirus associated with encephalitis, canine and avian papillomaviruses, and a potentially oncogenic polyomavirus (RacPyV) from raccoons, and other novel polyomaviruses in red pandas, alpacas, and rats.

    Aside from viral discovery, the organizing focus of work in the Pesavento laboratory is to investigate the association of these viruses with disease, through study of the biology of interactions between viruses and their target tissues. Depending on the virus this work ranges from the molecular development of viral constructs to perform cell biology or diagnostics to tissue culture models of virus:host cell interaction. The laboratory has current focused efforts, using traditional pathology, molecular virology, and cellular biology, on the study of naturally occurring neuroglial tumors associated with RacPyV, the respiratory polyomaviruses, and the potential contribution of circovirus (DogCV) to canine disease.
