    Research Focus

I study viral diseases of livestock that impact international commerce, notably emerging diseases such as bluetongue and African horse sickness that are transmitted by Culicoides biting midges. These diseases and their vectors are poorly characterized and are of increasing global concern, thus I serve regularly as an expert advisor to numerous organizations including the World Organization for Animal Health (O.I.E), the United States Departments of Agriculture and Homeland Security, and the European Union. My research laboratory is productively engaged in studying these diseases both locally and internationally and, in the process, training research scientists (including veterinarians) for careers in academia, industry and government.
